Black bear

The American Black bear (Ursus americanus) ranges in length from one hundred and fifty centimeters to one hundred and eighty centimeters, and typically stands about seventy six centimeters to ninety one centimeters at its shoulders. While standing up on its hind feet it can be up to seven feet tall. In terms of their body sizes, males are 33 % bigger than females. A good example of sexual dimorphism, males weigh between 116 and 280 Kg while females weigh between 45Kg to 190Kg. adult black bears have rounded ears, small eyes, short tail, a large body and good sense of smell.Despite the fact that they have a shaggy black hair, the color of their coat varies through blonde, cinnamon, black to chocolate brown. Black bears can walk and stand using their hind legs; however it is normal for them to walk using their four legs. Scholars argue that it usually stand to look at something or to get a better scent. Their shuffling gait results from their flat footed walk, with their forelegs sligh tly shorter than their hind legs, the second reason for their shuffle is that they walk with a pacing gait.Since 1800s, the black bear in Florida has lost over 83% of its habitat, a fact that is attributed to the increase in human population. This has resulted to a decrease in the number of black bear in Florida. Many wildlife scholars agree that the total number of black bear in Florida is currently a tiny fraction of its historical population of twelve thousand (12,000). The current population of black bears in Florida is estimated to be one thousand five hundred. A fact that is attributed to poaching, destruction of there natural habitant, changes in climatic conditions, natural disasters like being hit by a vehicle. In Florida alone more than 70% of black bears have been extirpated. There is an agent need to address this issue, so as to save the black bear from extinction; hence the writer of this paper is going to carry out research on extinction of black bears in Florida (Bensh off 2002 pp 8 -13). Statement of Purpose This paper is going to look at extinction of black bears in Florida(Ursus americanus), the causes of extinction of black bears, it will also try to establish the reasons why black bears should be protected the paper will conclude by suggesting what ought to be done so as to curb this problem. An Estimated one thousand two hundred black bear remains in Florida from a population that was once said to be twelve thousand. Black bear historically ranged in Alabama, Georgia and through the state. Currently major populations are found in Apalachicola, Ocala, Eglin air force base, Osceola national forest in central and northern Florida, big Cypress Swamp, and Backwater State Forest complex. When all the statistics and tragic trends are accounted for, the black bear in Florida is perceived to be a poor player on this swampy stage, this might explain why black bear’s current population is estimated to be one thousand two hundred individuals. (Blac k bear honey) Causes of black bears extinction in Florida The primary cause of extinction of black bear in Florida is the loss of their habitat which has been caused by human development (increase in human population), according to figures realized by defenders of wildlife (2008), more than twenty acres of black bear and other wild life habitat is destroyed every hour in Florida. In Addition to this the road system in Florida has also expanded at a constant rate of five miles per day in the last fifty years. According to Florida wildlife and fish conservation commission 2001 statistics, expansion of roads in Florida has resulted into the death of eight hundred and eighty bears since 1976 (Scott 2004 p 26).The second cause of black bear extinction in Florida is the failure by USFWS to list Black bear species as an endangered species under ESA in the right time– more than fifteen years ago, Florida residence responded to the escalating threats and decline in population of the bl ack bear by petitioning USFWS to declare the animal as an endangered species, USFWS replied by publishing their ninety days findings in which they noted that there was no enough evidence that could make them declare the black bear a threatened species, despite acknowledging the fact that the animal habitat had been extensively destroyed.Later on they removed the black bear from the ESA candidates’ listings. Florida residence viewed the refusal by the agency as perplexing. The agency refusal to declare the animal as an endangered species gave poachers moral of poaching the black bear, black bear was also included as a sport hunt. This also opened door for the inclusion of black bear in the hunting sport (Scott C 2004 p 30). The third cause is illegal killing or poaching, so as to supply the Asian markets with bear hearts, paws and galls, these organs (paws, hearts and galls) are perceived to have medicinal values in some Asian countries like Korea, China and Japan. The demands for these organs in Asian countries also affect other bears like Polar and Grizzly bears. (Maehr 2008) Reasons why black bears should be protected in Florida Black bear should be protected because it is perceived to be an umbrella species by the scientist, given that it has a wide ranging species. Through protecting black bear in Florida and their habitat, other animals and plants species will also be protected in the long run some of these animals which will be protected includes the eastern indigo snake and Florida scrub jay.The black bear is a symbol for Florida’s diverse wildlife. Black bear being a wide ranging omnivore shares habitat with other species of animals who are natives of Florida. Florida black bear should also be protected because it is an indicator species. Its health and population size can be used in determining if the ecosystem is impaired or is healthy(Burks 1999 p 26). Discussion Despite the threats that black bear are facing in Florida, the U.S.Fish an d wildlife services department have the view that Florida black bear can live on a very small land, that are owned by the public. The agency has allocated the following Osceola National Forest, Big cypress National preserve, Apalachicola National forest and Ocala National forest; these four lands are too small to ensure a long term survival and protection of Florida black bear. Conservation biologists and USFWS agree that all endangered species should have at least ten secure populations, however for black bear they are only four in Florida. The writer of this paper is of the opinion that to stop extinction of these species the agency should allocate more land to these species so that they can have a large breeding space. The agency should also consider declaring this species endangered specie. This will reduce the rate of their extinction. (Scott 2004 pp 32 -38) Most of the black bears are usually killed between September and October. This is the period in which male bears move away to go start their kingdom. When moving they, cross the roads and on the way they are hit by vehicles. To stop these killings, drivers should be encouraged to drive with a lot of care during this period. If this is done the number of black bears who are dying because of being hit by vehicles will drastically reduce (Green place) To survive, a single bear needs a minimum of fifty square miles, as human population increases they occupies the black bears range. This fragment the black bears land. When too much land is lost, the bears find it hard to mate and to find food; this also forces them to come into contact with human beings. Scholars argue that to keep black bears healthy, they need like 500,000 to 1,000,000 acres. The agency should allocate more land for these species. If this is done there population is likely to surpass the current one (Green place) Conclusions The population of black bear in Florida has reduced and there is an agent need to address this matter so as to save t his species from being distinct. Some of the solution to these problems is: the amount of land that has been allocated for the bears should be increased this will give them more breeding and eating space, the government should declare black bear as an endangered specie in Florida this will save them, drivers should be carefully when driving in the high ways in September and Octobers, and lastly the federal and the state government should enforce strict laws which will end up protecting all the animals who are endangered.Reference: Benshoff P 2002 Myakka Pineapple Press pp 8 -13 Black bears in Florida retrieved from www.floridaconservation. org on March 23, 2009 Black bear honey retrieved from www. swfwmd. state on March 23, 2009 Burks D 1999 place of the wild Island publisher’s pp 23 -32 Foreman D 2004 Rewilding N. Foreign Banks Pros and Cons Essay

Today with the blessings of tremendous development in the communication technology, relationship and interdependence among the countries have been growing rapidly which signifies globalization as an ongoing process. Globalization helps the international business- that is engaging in cross border expansion of sales, acquiring resources and diversifying risk. Factor that benefiting the foreign banks in Bangladesh: Bangladesh is a developing country with a huge population. From the beginning of Bangladesh as an independent country it has been a desiring place for doing business for business organizations operating globally. This circumstance is existed in banking and other financial service sectors. There are some factors that benefitting the foreign banks operating in Bangladesh. 1. Extended sales in an enormously populated country with a low competition: Bangladesh is a country with a large population, so this place is a big market for the banks in a single boundary with a simple set of legislations. So the foreign banks operating in Bangladesh can serve a large group of customers with a single marketing policy. As now a day the business transactions are taken place through banks and house hold savings are kept in banks so the foreign banks do not have to be concerned about the demand. The local banks can not give a big competition as well. 2. Minimizing risk: As usual the multinational banks like other multinational corporations minimize risk by operating in Bangladesh. That means if the banking sector collapses in a country the multinational banks will not loose everything and it is a risk diversifying method. 3. Acquiring resources: The foreign banks operating in Bangladesh can acquire Bangladeshi capitals, information and human resources easily. The local expertise is keen to work in MLCs. So the foreign banks can acquire the local human resources easily at a very cheap rate compare to the global condition. Having the benefits in Bangladesh 10 local banks have established their operation in our country and working comfortably for years after years. Influences of foreign banks in Bangladesh: Benefits: 1. A boast in banking sector: Local banks are expected to react as the foreign banks enter to the country. The local banks here have changed their police in a positive way caused by healthy competition. 2. Bringing ne management and advertising techniques: foreign banks typically bring newer and more modernized management and advertising techniques in our banking sectors. The local banks can learn the modern techniques to cope up with the changing economic environment and globalization. 3. Introducing new modernized technology: In Bangladesh most of the modern financial technology such as ATM, different types of cards, off balance sheet accounting and the latest computing technology brought by foreign banks and spread out in whole banking sectors. 4. Helping in international trade: Aiding in the development of trade and foreign direct investment are presented by foreign banks. Such as opening an L/C in a multinational bank may be more helpful for the merchants. Problems: 1). Foreign domination: the established foreign banks have far greater brand value and economic capability than the local banks. So they can easily dominate by attracting customers. They also are being magnets for local human resources, so the local banks do not get the local expertises which also pull the local banks behind the multinational banks. 2). Lack of local commitment: the foreign banks lack commitment towards the country for some reasons not meeting some social responsibilities. 3.)Â  Cream skimming behavior: though there is not much data available to prove this fact many people think that the foreign banks cream skim the market- taking disproportionate share of best local business away from domestic banks. 4). Unhealthy completion: introduction of foreign banks has added pressure to the local banks by increasing competition which results in risk taking of local banks. So the foreign banks of Bangladesh have a great influence in our economy in the form of pros and cons which are effectively altering our banking sector, with their operation.

A Response to a Historical Essay Based on the US Civil War Essay Example for Free

A Response to a Historical Essay Based on the US Civil War Essay ? The war as people have known and understood it, has inculcated nothing but violence. Over the history, the remnants of different wars became distinct because of the horrors that it caused and imbibed within the innocent lives of people not involved with it. In addition, those who have actually participated in wars, battleworn and inflicted with such violence can only remember the dreadful effects that it left. However, recent studies and approaches to war histories suggest otherwise. Indeed, there have been numerous horrors inflicted by the war towards innocent victims – women, children, elderly, and the soldiers themselves. But on a different light, the article by Drew Gilpin Faust shows that these wars, although violent and bloody, have brought numerous lessons that only the battlefield can best teach the people. In contrast to the usual and common notion perceiving war as evil and violent, some historians view the war as an enlightening period in the history. Francis Parkman believed that the Americans, who have for so long been vilified by their pursuit for success, will be purified and strengthened after a season of war wherein they shall call out for new ideals and they shall learn to appreciate emotions and sentiments relevant for them to destroy selfishness and greed (Faust, 2004, pp. 369-370). In a distinct manner, the Americans have been dominating the international arena due to their indespensable strength and the supremacy that they hold before less developed and weaker countries. And as such, this rendered the Americans the incapability to become keen of other nations’ sentiments towards their leadership. And with this, the outcomes of the war can be the only way to bring about worthy realizations towards the Americans. Although no one can deny that in reality, the wars that people have bravely fought caused numerous of lives gone to waste. However, despite the horrors of losing loved ones, comrades and brothers became a necessary sacrifice in order to purify a nation that has been subjected to ill doings and a means to cleanse the people out of their sins committed against their own nation and other nations. It may seem morbid to other people, but more civilians became largely interested in understanding the experiences of the fighters firsthand. Civilians became more willing to feel the sensation because for them, these experiences will render them the ability to become more humane – feeling different sensations and privilege of having emotions for them to grasp (Faust, 2004, p. 372). Those who served the military to cure the wounded became immensely satisfied of their tasks. For them, the patients that they attended to and the wounds that they had to cure introduced them to richer and new insights. And though these may have connoted a great level of violence, nonetheless these experiences explored a great deal out of their humanity. And for those who have endured the battle themselves as soldiers, a number treated such experience with rejoice despite the destruction and chaos that it caused them (Faust, 2004, p. 372). With all these perceptions about wars, Civil War in particular, most of the historians developed greater interests in tackling the horrors and lessons that come with it. The fondness of most of Americans in the wars that they have fought became distinct that most of the historians have dedicated a large amount of their time and career to discover the truth behind the Civil War and the lessons that it has ought to teach the people. As such, over the history, numerous books and studies have been developed that were dedicated to the Civil War. James McPherson’s book entitled â€Å"Battle Cry of Freedom† was one of the most celebrated composition and a direct beneficiary of the Civil War’s fame. It turned out to become one of the most respected and famous books that tackled the experiences behind the war. Consequently, the â€Å"Journal of Southern History† also became one of the best compositions that broadly represented the different aspects of the conflicts during the Civil War. Given the significant increase of people’s interest in the war, it is logical to wonder what has triggered the people’s desire to study more about it. Ken Burn explained that the issues confronted during the Civil War era is continously reflecting the contemporary issues that Americans still face today (Faust, 2004, pp. 374-375). In addition to Burn’s explanation, several writers have also come to the conclusion that people are still interested with the cause and outcome of the Civil War because it has shaped modern America’s society and culture. They believe that the horrors and lessons behind the war, though they are considerably dreaded, are keys to discover America’s roots and origin. The whole point of the article really does make sense. The turnout and effects of the war that it bestowed upon the country, the fighters involved in it, and the greater number of innocent lives who had to bear with the war experiences created a huge impact that is impossible to forget in a lifetime. The different aspects and different angles given to the study of Civil War offered a great amount of help in understanding the fruits and losses behind the incident. As such, such wars and battles mirror the history of America. During the present era, the war that America has fought and is still fighting presents the same outcome – numerous lives lost and land and property devastation. Same with America’s previous war engagement, they invented the war â€Å"in order to control violence† (Faust, 2004, p. 381). Equipped with weak evidences behind America’s attack against Iraq, America has acted in order to create for their country a â€Å"sense of meaning, intention and goal-directedness† (Faust, 2004, p. 381). Again, America was pushed into a war in order to regain superiority and control. Indeed, the wars that America has fought came with distinct lessons despite the unwanted memories and experiences that the wars have unleashed. But despite these horrors, the American government still pushed their nations onto a different battle regardless of what the world has to say about it. It is true, the Civil War taught Americans a great deal of lessons which were learned the hardest and most painful way. But now, they stand the war again – and numerous studies about the wars may not have helped at all. War, from the dawn of the history until the present generation, is still yet a battle that has not been won. Reference Faust, D. G. (2004). We Should Grow Too Fond of It: Why We Love the Civil War. Design a compnt IP network and equipment need, and subnet ip using Case Study

Design a compnt IP network and equipment need, and subnet ip using vlsm - Case Study Example The requirement and the budget are large since they depend on the large number of employees in every office. Requirement and Cost The project will require Web Development Company (WDC) to provide a list of items in two categories, hardware and software. The software includes original licensed applications and programs. The hardware in this context includes high quality workstation terminals. The Web Development Company (WDC) will require server systems with capacity for data storage and high-speed processor for the purpose of high performance. In the market, the cost depends on the decisions of the vendor. The budget of the project will be determined by the average costs after doing detailed market survey. The budget is as shown below: ITEM NUMBER PRICE FOR ONE ITEM TOTAL COST       US $ US $ Workstation 200 1500 300,000 Windows Server 7 1800 12,600 Unix Server 7 42000 294,000 Color Printer 100 300 30,000 Color Printers (High Volume) 7 500 3,500 Switch 7 300 2,100 Router 5 350 1, 750 Windows XP SP 3 200 100 20,000 Linux Red Hat  Release 3 7 18000 126,000 Windows Server 2012 8 500 4,000 Patch channel 5 300 1,500 NOD 32 Internet Security Antivirus 10 200 2,000 Firewall system 1 200 200 Installation Costs 1 150000 150,000 Total       947,650 The budget is within the provision of US $ 1,000,000, which the Web Development Company has set aside for the project. ... The IP address range applies to all hosts within the network. In the process of allocation of addresses, there has to be an allowance for enough IP addresses to enable the network to expand as the Web Design Company desires for the future. Each branch will have to provide additional host together with a new hosts whenever a new branch is being established. At the same time, each new branch will require point-to-point addresses. The architecture and the topology have to be designed in such a way that they support the mobile workers since they communicate through the Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections (Moussavi, 2011, p.56). Further to that, there is need to have additional IP addresses allocated to the other components of the network, for example, network photocopiers, scanners and printers. In every department, the average number of employees who will require using the printers, scanners and cameras is about 50. A minimum of one printer is required for every 50 employees in a department. Alternatively, the printers will be allocated to different web sites for each subnet. Some sites are extremely very small. It therefore means that they can only have one printer to serve the number of staff in that department. Such small sites include Hornsby and Penrith, which require just one printer and one photocopier. Some versions of photocopiers are of combined functions, having photocopier, with an inbuilt printer and scanner of high qualities. As required by the subnet naming, each printer and photocopier will get the last available number in the subnet range to which it belongs. Bandwidth Optimization Subnets will be used to separate the

Communication 270 Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Communication 270 - Research Paper Example Religious intolerance has been quoted as one of the major factors facilitating the growth of terrorism in the twentieth and twenty first century. Indridi Indridason, a professor of political science, University of Oxford explains that terrorism has a great impact on domestic politics as well as international politics. Using terror groups to accomplish some mischievous mandates has been a common practice in many countries since the French revolution. Understanding how the terror groups work and the strategies they use in inflicting fear and intimidating citizens is important in learning the trends that terrorism has adopted and how sophisticated and uncontrollable it is of late. This research was done to understand the working of the terror groups and the methods they use to accomplish their political ambitions and interests. As stated earlier many terror groups constitutes of individuals who are against or resisting a given rule. To prove that the given government is failing to work for the people, they engage in activities such as killing civilians to show the failure in offering security to the society. In some cases an individual who did not participate in the planning or the execution of the terror activities uses the activities to benefit his quest to lead the people. For instance in 2001, there were twin attacks in New York and Washington DC which resulted in the loss of huge numbers of innocent citizens. In the elections that followed, Bloomberg used the issue to promise people security and address the issue of terrorism thereby earning himself the position of the mayor. George Bush in the elections that followed also embarked on the issue of terrorism as one of his key agendas in his manifesto. Since the people were totally scared and a repeat of such an attack was not anything anyone would like dreaming of, anyone offering a solution could earn cheap votes. Terrorism has evolved greatly to be what it is today. In the 19th century

Philosophy of Nursing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Philosophy of Nursing - Essay Example The life philosophy may vary based on individual differences, cultural differences and the religious differences. Philosophy is a kind of beliefs, values and goals a person sets in his life. Philosophy in short is the personal belief about how to live or how to deal with a situation. On academic terms, philosophy is the origin of every sort of knowledge. In olden times, when science was not developed much, the philosophers were the persons who interpreted the problems and they were able to provide answers to the doubts of the common people. Philosophy was the first sort of knowledge originated in human history. All the other subjects like, science, mathematics, literature etc gradually separated from philosophy when the knowledge became gradually increased. Since the origin of every sort of knowledge is attributed to philosophy, the highest degree awarded in all the subjects is labelled as Doctor of Philosophy or PhD in academics. Two persons working in an organization, in the same department and same position may approach their work differently because of their difference in attitudes and philosophy about work. For example, consider two accountants working in the same company. One may finish his works daily and may not keep anything for the next day. The other may not finish his works in time and he may keep something for the next day. This is because of their difference in attitude or philosophy in approaching the profession. Nursing profession is considered as a noble profession because of their contributions in saving the life of sick people. For me nurses are not getting the respect they deserve from the society considering the nature of their services. I have selected nursing as my profession because of its relevance and value in the society. For me human life is the most important thing in the world and I am happy, if I am

Identified Limitations and Threats to Validity Essay

Identified Limitations and Threats to Validity - Essay Example Corporate associations determine the information the person holds about the company, which determines the responses given in a questionnaire. The participants were at least 18 years old, and lived in Lima. This selection predisposes the respondents to certain outcomes. Reliability is affected by the stability of collected data. The responses of the recipient are bound to change during different periods. External validity refers to the extent to which the findings can be extended to other areas. The respondents were selected randomly and came only from Lima. Their responses could therefore fail to cover the behavior of customers in other cities and countries (Marquina, 2007). Questionnaires are effective for collecting large amounts of data. In this case, over 600 customers participated and each answered 32 questions. In this way the researcher was able to collect large amounts of customer views. Correlation between the different sets of data could be used to determine its reliability. However, respondents might not be willing to give responses. The researcher used two interview phases to using the same subjects. This provided more accurate responses. Interviews can be used for qualitative research. A research for CSR utilization in Nigeria used interviews as the source of information. The research method affects the quality of results collected. In this case interviews were used and the interviewer cross-examined respondents for detailed answers. In this way, the researcher collects detailed information regarding the study question. The same interview questions were used, and the previous interviewees could discuss the questions with others. This influenced their view regarding CSR in the country. The environment of the interviewees determines the quality of answers they give. In this case the respondents came from different sectors and the answers given depend on their knowledge about CSR. Respondents were from

Reflective writing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 2

Reflective writing - Essay Example Each one of them has its importance to understand the whole concept of human health (Jasper, 2003). Each of those subjects has their different goals to make a student understand the objectives in a specific way. For example, I learnt the significance of blood tests and its relation with the physiology of the patient. I learnt about various diseases and disorders in my patients through in-depth study of pathology. During my course of studies, I have observed that sometimes nurses can unearth what a doctor fails to discover within a patient. Clinical experience further polishes a student. It enables a nurse to understand the practical and research based approach of this profession (Neal, 2003). During my course of studies, I have learnt the role and responsibilities assigned to a nurse in a typical healthcare setting. Nurses are focused to deliver quality care services to the patient. Nurses are the key persons behind formulating a care plan for the patient. My courses have enabled me to become a bridge between a patient and a doctor. My studies have helped to develop a sheer knowledge on different diseases and how a doctor responds to his patient (it also includes the treatment), knowledge on different kinds of drugs, knowledge of nursing care and how as a nurse I have to respond to my patients. My studies have also taught me how to make the decisions as a nurse, how to respond to your setting and how to prioritize and organize your responsibilities. In my opinion, nursing is an art as well as a science. It is an art as it helps me as a nurse to seek different innovative ways to provide care to my patients emotionally and physically as well as it becomes a science when I have to treat my patients using different medical techniques and drugs. Basic nursing techniques are the core of this course which were taught to me in the most professional manner. During the years of progressing as a professional nurse, I have witnessed that it is important for a nurse to deve lop therapeutic relations with the patients. For a nurse, it is highly important to maintain a close relation with the patients based on trust and respect (McHugh, 2000). Secondly, as a professional nurse I believe that nurses should know the art of communication and interaction with their patients. My course subject related to the study of behavioral sciences and human psychology has helped me to interact, understand and communicate effectively with my patients. It is important that nurses should focus on their interaction and communication skills when establishing therapeutic relations with the patients. According to Cutcliff (2005), nurses should emphasize on establishing increased interactions with their patients which as a result, increases their confidence, independence and competency as a professional nurse. As a result, as a professional nurse and a part of quality healthcare system, I am more focused on developing communication and interpersonal skills with my patients and their families. I have observed that patients feel more relax and confident with those nurses who make them feel comfortable even in pain and suffering. To make a patient trust you, it is highly important that you should know the art of communication which will help you to secure the trust of your patients (Nichols, 1993). As a professional nurse, I believe that there is a need to focus more on how the relationship between a patient and a
